To put this question to Doctor Philo, we must admit that it is more philosophical than scientific.
I would even say it is bad to understand physics and good for philosophical reflection.
In fact, the physicist is one who accepts a light heart not to ask certain questions like: what is time? What is space? What the blank?
He might say, following your remark that the vacuum is that which contains 1 atom per cubic centimeter - and no more. And basta!
Where is the problem?
1 - The trouble comes from what is still talk of "empty", then we should keep this term for anything assuming it really exists. If no such anything, so why still use this term empty?
-> And why not, if a 1 centimeter cube containing 1 atom and no more, had special properties? As the vacuum energy mentioned quantum physics? Or spread of something as action at a distance?
2 - The role of the philosopher is to clarify the concepts here, and that's all.
The problem of assimilation empty nothingness. The void is the absence be. Nothingness is the negation be. Something we can not say anything - because that "nothingness is ..." is a characteristic attributed to a substrate and then give it some life.
short: if nothing was the negation of being, it is also what destroys the being, and therefore it would be closer to anti-matter but emptiness.
3 - So confused emptiness and nothingness was the cause of many misfortunes in physics. Like to believe that the nature abhors a vacuum , since there is, divine creation, it can have nothing in it that is either imperfect or which gnaw the inside (like the holes black).
4 - The only interesting debate in the history of knowledge in this area has been I think with the Epicureans, who believed that atoms and vacuum sufficient to explain the universe. The question was whether the vacuum was a substance or space devoid of matter. Because in this case, the debate was overlook nothing, and focused on the mode of existence of the void.
Here, note, philosophy does not forge new concepts, but it illuminates the issues. Already
not so bad.
